Vijayanagar (Deccan)

Vijayanagara (ವಿಜಯನಗರ) is the name of two different kingdoms that were located in present-day India. One of them was the ancient and vast Vijayanagara Empire, located in South India, in the Deccan region. Its capital, Vijayanagara (currently Hampi), was situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, in the present-day state of Karnataka. This entry deals with that one.

Title of the prince: Emperor, Raja.

Dynasty: Aravidu.

Religion: Hindu.

Area: variable.

Population: unknown.

Current head of the dynasty: Prince Krishna Devaraya.

History: The Vijayanagara Empire was ruled by four dynasties: Sangama, Saluva, Tuluva, and Aravidu. It was a powerful Hindu empire that dominated a large part of South India from the 14th to the 17th centuries. It was an important center of culture, commerce, and resistance against the Islamic sultanates of the north. Its period of greatest influence extended from 1336 until the defeat at the Battle of Talikota in 1565, although the Aravidu dynasty continued to rule a reduced empire until the mid-17th century.

After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire and the relocation of the capital to Chandragiri, it is said that the Aravidu dynasty (the last dynasty of Vijayanagara) retained Anegundi as a jagir (a land grant).

The current head of the dynasty, the 19th link in the royal chain, is Krishna Devaraya. His parents were Raja Sri Achyuta Devaraya and Rajamata Smt. Chandrakantha Devi, belonging to the royal family of Narasinghgarh. Prince Krishna is married to Rani Rathnasree Raya and is the father of three children: one son and two daughters.

The son and heir is Prince Tirumala Venkata Devaraya.
